Identity is pretty close to my truth. As I grew up, I always had a hard time fitting in, and I was never sure why. It could have been because of my seeing the world in a different way and therefore possibly saying the wrong things. Perhaps it was my tall, gangly frame that put fellow classmates off. Whatever the reason, I just felt like an outcast most of my childhood. Over the years, I learned how to adapt and eventually created my "in public" personality that I would put on, like a coat. This painting is a glimpse of the real me and the image I put out there. But the question becomes, is my true self the quirky and kind of crazy graphic face on the left or the more subdued one on the right? I do believe they both are. I could even go so far as to say this is an example of an extrovert and an introvert, which I most definitely am. And the more I accept that, the more comfortable I am with myself.
An element to note: lines along the right edge, going from top to bottom. That is a ruler and symbol of the judgement we humans do to each other. It is so often a negative action and result. Especially when someone is looking for something lacking in another person. However, a person might also "measure," or size someone up, to simply see if they are friendly!
